Our Recommendations On Where To Hike In Southern California & How

If there's one thing we can all agree on these days, it's that we need to keep our mental, emotional, and physical health in tip top shape, and there's no better way to do that than to go for a nice little hike. If we can't travel to our heart's desire, we can at least get outside and stretch our legs.

Fresh air seems to be in limited supply these days...quite literally. So we here at CALPAK have been doing our research, compiling first-hand experiences and tips to make a trip outdoors one less thing you have to worry about.

Holy Jim Trail

Where: Corona, CA

"First things first, buy a $5 daily permit from Trabuco General Store. (Opens at 8AM every day) If you plan on making multiple trips, they do have an Adventure Pass. Make sure your car can handle a dirt road for about 5 miles.

The waterfalls and refreshing water are worth this easy to moderate hike!"

ABALONE COVE SHORELINE PARK

"There are 10 trails, ranging from easy to moderate, taking you through the beautiful Palos Verdes coastline. Some days you can see dolphins and play in the tide pools.

Dogs on leashes are allowed, and it's a great place for kids."

SOLSTICE CANYON HIKING TRAIL

Where: Malibu, CA

"I love hiking in Malibu on the weekends, and what makes this one so special is how secluded it is in the middle of Los Angeles. The cell phone service isn't great there, but that makes it so much more enjoyable!

Perfect combination of an easy to medium stroll with a waterfall view."

CULVER CITY TRAILS

"Quick and easy hike, if you're okay with stairs. You can walk back down the stairs, or take a longer pathway down.

Parking can be difficult to find, and can be crowded during peak times. Not everyone wears a mask, so I recommend going earlier or later in the day to avoid that."

Sturtevant falls

"Purchase an adventure pass for the parking lot. We purchased ours at the REI in Arcadia, CA since we were passing by. REI will direct you on what to do next if they're sold out.

It's a moderate hike. Be sure to take water and snacks because you just never know. There's a waterfall at the end of the hike, and it's just over 3 miles long. Dunk your hair in nearby cool streams and climb some trees - it’s as fun and as long as you want to make it :-)."

PORTUGUESE BEND RESERVE

"The view at the top is absolutely breathtaking, with a great view of Catalina Island and the coastline. It's a very easy hike, but you need good, comfortable shoes to walk along the path.

It's very easy to go down, but a little more difficult coming back up. Shade is rare, so bring a hat and wear lots of sunscreen. Street parking is free, which is a plus for me."
